Virginia State University (VSU), founded in 1882 as the Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute – the first fully state supported, four-year institution of higher learning for Blacks in America – today is one of Virginia’s two land-grant institutions. VSU offers 50 baccalaureate and Master’s degree programs and a Certificate of Advanced Study within five schools. In 2006, Virginia State University graduated its first-ever doctoral students, who earned their Doctor of Education in Administration and Supervision.
Recent rankings in U.S. News and World Report reflect VSU’s improvements and measurable progress in a broad array of areas, including quality of student attending the school, class size, faculty expertise, graduation and retention rates and alumni giving. The university has also developed valuable partnerships with the private and public sector entities, leading to internship opportunities for its students and other valuable exchanges of knowledge. A few examples are: Alstom Power, CIA, DuPont, IBM, ITT Industries, Owens & Minor, USDA, Walt Disney World, Co. and Xerox. |
- U.S. News & World Report acknowledged VSU’s excellence by naming the University the top, public, master’s level HBCU in America in 2008. Diverse Issues in Higher Education ranked VSU 22nd among all colleges in the U.S. in awarding Bachelor’s degrees to African-Americans in 2007.
- Diverse Issues…also ranked the University among the top 100 colleges in the U.S. in awarding Master’s degrees to minorities in several areas. For the granting of Master’s degrees to African Americans VSU ranked: 7th in mathematics and statistics; 24th in biological and biomedical sciences; 10th in English language and literature/letters; and 32nd in education.

- VSU opened a new state of the art $20 million three story Engineering and Technology Building in late Fall 2006
- The American Association of State Colleges and Universities recognized VSU as one of 12 universities nationwide that reported higher than predicted graduation rates as well higher than predicted improvement in graduation rates
|
- The university has research Centers of Excellence in several areas including Physics, Energy and Environmental Studies, Engineering Technology, Water Quality Management, Aquaculture, Education, Social Sciences, and Business.
- VSU’s research activities are sponsored by, among others, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Defense Department, National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health as well as private industry.
