ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

The University of Virginia (U.Va.), located in Charlottesville, is distinctive among institutions of higher education, and consistently ranks among the top two public universities in the United States.  The University was founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson and sustains an ideal of developing, through education, leaders who are well-prepared to help shape the future of the nation.

U.Va. has long been a leading institution in humanities, social sciences, and arts scholarship.  The University is now committed to enhancing research in key interdisciplinary areas of science and engineering including: morphogenesis and regenerative medicine; nano and quantum science and engineering; computer and information science and engineering; healthy aging; and environment, energy, and sustainability. In building these complementary strengths, U.Va. cultivates a university research culture that supports innovation and ultimately leads to discoveries that will transform society.

RANKING

  • The University of Virginia is tied as the No. 2 best public university in the 2011 edition of the U.S. News and World Report rankings. In the 13 years since U.S. News began ranking public universities as a separate category, U.Va. has ranked either No. 1 or No. 2.

  • In 2011, U.S. News and World Report ranked U.Va. as the 8th best in the country for undergraduate teaching.

  • U.Va. continues to rank in the Top 25 among the best of all national universities, public and private, tying with UCLA and Wake Forest at No. 25 in 2010.

  • The University of Virginia is ranked No. 1 for the second year in a row among 50 "best value" public colleges and universities, according to The Princeton Review, one of America's most widely known education services and test preparation companies.

  • The University of Virginia Medical Center is one of only 15 major teaching hospitals to be ranked among the nation's top 100 hospitals, according to Thomson Reuters' 100 Top Hospitals: National Benchmarks study. In addition, the U.Va. Medical Center is one of only two hospitals from the Commonwealth to be selected.

  • In June 2010, 47 U.Va. Health System doctors were selected for inclusion in the annual guide America's Top Doctors™ (eighth edition) recognizing those physicians who are considered among the top one percent in their specialties.
