ABOUT OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY

Old Dominion University (ODU) is Virginia’s forward-focused, public doctoral research university. ODU’s high-performing students, nationally recognized faculty and determined entrepreneurial approach to problem solving drive cutting-edge research, eminent scholarship, and strategic partnerships to create innovative solutions that improve individuals’ lives, communities, and the world.

Located in historic Norfolk, Va., the 188 acre Old Dominion University campus stretches from the Elizabeth River to the Lafayette River and offers a small-college look and feel in the midst of an exciting, growing metropolitan environment, with a quality of life that is among the best anywhere.

ODU enjoys one of the most diverse student bodies found anywhere. Some 1,400 international students attend Old Dominion University and about 33 percent of every freshman class is non-Caucasian. Almost 6,000 students live within walking distance of the campus, while another 4,000 are distance learners who attend classes at nearly 50 locations throughout Virginia and as far away as Georgia, Arizona, Washington State, and even U.S. Navy ships and submarines deployed around the globe. And, almost thirty percent of the student body is in some way connected to the military.

Designated, by the Carnegie Foundation, as a research extensive university with high research activity, ODU has grown its research expenditures almost  over 250 percent over the last five years. ODU has invested in creating a collaborative research environment, which attracts outstanding, high performing faculty and produces accomplished, innovation-minded students, including the first college student in the Commonwealth of Virginia to be awarded a patent.

Old Dominion University, through the work of its sixteen research and enterprise centers, is dedicated to furthering the creation of intellectual capital from basic and applied research and using its ideas and technologies to address issues of global concern, improve the quality of life, and create economic prosperity for all.

In the spring of 2010, Old Dominion University launched the ODU Business Gateway initiative that provides companies and organizations of all sizes a single entry point to engage the intellectual capital, innovative technologies, and world-class infrastructure of Old Dominion University to solve business problems, create new offerings, and unlock operational efficiencies that save time and money.
